Mexico Trucking Strike
03.15.2009
The National Confederation of Mexican Truckers announced a national carrier work stoppage planned for March 23, 2009 in conjunction with Camara Nacional del Autotransporte de Carga, or CANCAR.
In the Confederation’s announcement, they stated the decision to strike was made by the National Committee as a direct result of Mexico’s failure to respond to carrier concerns. They also state that the President of Mexico, C. Felipe Calderón Hinojosa, failed to recognize truckers and include the National Confederation of Mexican Truckers and CANCAR in his recent crisis bailout plan for Mexico.
Mexican carriers are requesting a reduction in fuel cost, a 50% decrease in tolls and suspension of a new tax (IVA Tax) recently implemented on carriers by the government. The lack of security on national highways is also of concern.
